Overview

Windsor Racecourse, officially Royal Windsor, is a unique Flat-only venue set on an island in the River Thames, just outside the historic town of Windsor.

Renowned for its scenic setting, lively Monday evening meetings, and summer social buzz, Windsor is a favourite for both racing fans and those looking for a relaxed, picturesque day or night out. The course’s riverside backdrop and proximity to Windsor Castle add a touch of royal glamour to every fixture.

History

Racing at Windsor dates back to 1866, and the course has long been a staple of the southern Flat racing scene. Its riverside location and quirky figure-of-eight layout have made it a distinctive venue, while the popular Monday night meetings, introduced in the 1960s, have become a summer tradition. Windsor’s close ties to the Royal Family and regular investment in facilities keep it at the forefront of British racing.

Course Characteristics

Windsor is a right-handed, flat, figure-of-eight turf track about a mile and a half around. The course features gentle bends and a long home straight, making it a fair test for most runners.

The unique layout means there are no tight turns, and the ground is generally well-maintained. The track is best known for its competitive sprints and mile races, with a bias towards handy, well-balanced horses.

  • Track Type: Right-handed, flat, figure-of-eight, turf, Flat only
  • Flat Races: Up to 1m3f, with regular sprints and mile contests
  • Notable Quirk: The only figure-of-eight Flat track in Britain, offering a unique test of balance and agility

Facilities

Windsor offers three main enclosures: Club, Grandstand, and Silver Ring. All provide good views, access to bars, restaurants, and betting outlets. The Club Enclosure boasts fine dining and exclusive areas, while the Silver Ring is perfect for picnics and a relaxed day out. The course features a parade ring, hospitality suites, and riverside lawns ideal for summer gatherings.

  • Ticket Prices (2025): Silver Ring £12–£18, Grandstand £20–£28, Club Enclosure £32–£50 (under-18s free with an adult)
  • Drinks: Pint £7, glass of wine £8, soft drinks £3.20
  • Food: From classic racecourse snacks and fish & chips to gourmet options in the Club Enclosure

Atmosphere

Windsor is known for its sociable, summer vibe and picturesque riverside lawns. The Monday evening meetings are especially popular, drawing crowds for racing, live music, and a festival feel. The course’s setting and layout make it a great choice for groups, families, and anyone looking to combine sport with a relaxed social scene.

The Famous Windsor Boat Cruise

One of the most delightful ways to arrive at Windsor Racecourse is by boat. A wonderful river cruise operates from Windsor town centre, taking you gently along the Thames right to the racecourse entrance.

The journey is scenic, relaxing, and sets the perfect tone for a summer evening at the races. It’s highly recommended for visitors—whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, arriving by boat adds a touch of magic to any outing.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Beautiful riverside setting with views of Windsor Castle
  • Unique figure-of-eight track and fair racing
  • Lively Monday evenings and summer atmosphere
  • Easy access from London and the South East
  • The boat cruise to the entrance is a must-try

Cons:

  • Flat racing only—no jumps action
  • Facilities are traditional rather than ultra-modern
  • Can be busy on summer evenings—arrive early for the best spots

Notable Facts

  • Windsor is the only figure-of-eight Flat track in Britain.
  • The Monday evening meetings are a long-standing summer tradition.
  • The course’s riverside lawns are perfect for picnics and group outings.

Betting Advice

Windsor’s flat, figure-of-eight circuit suits handy, well-balanced horses and those with proven course form. In sprints, a low draw can be an advantage, especially on soft ground.

Course specialists and horses with form at similar tracks (like Chester or Epsom) are always worth a look. Watch for trainers who regularly target the course, such as Richard Hannon and Andrew Balding.

  • Look for: Handy types, course specialists, and low draws in sprints
  • Trainer angles: Southern trainers often excel, especially in handicaps
  • Pace: Prominent racers can be hard to catch on the long straight

Getting There

Windsor Racecourse is just two miles from Windsor town centre, well signposted from the M4 and M25. Free parking is available on site, with dedicated spaces for disabled visitors.

The nearest train stations are Windsor & Eton Central and Windsor & Eton Riverside, with shuttle buses and riverboat transfers available on race days. The boat cruise from Windsor town centre is a unique and highly recommended way to arrive.

Parking

Parking is free and plentiful, with disabled spaces near the main entrance.

What to Wear

There’s no strict dress code—smart casual is fine for all enclosures, but the Club Enclosure encourages a smarter look. Dress for the weather, as the course is open and can be breezy, and comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the lawns and riverside areas.

Final Thoughts

Windsor Racecourse offers Flat racing with a unique riverside charm and a lively social scene. Arriving by boat cruise is a highlight in itself, setting the tone for a memorable raceday. With its scenic setting, friendly crowd, and popular Monday evenings, Windsor is a standout of the southern racing summer.
