Overview

Yarmouth Racecourse, officially Great Yarmouth Racecourse, is a popular Flat-only venue set just a stone’s throw from the sandy beaches of the Norfolk coast.

Known for its relaxed, holiday atmosphere, competitive summer racing, and family-friendly facilities, Yarmouth is a favourite for locals, tourists, and racing fans looking to combine sport with a seaside escape. The course’s long, straight track and easy access make it a top pick for both serious punters and those after a classic day out.

History

Racing at Yarmouth dates back to 1715, making it one of the oldest racecourses in the country. The current North Denes site has hosted meetings since 1920, and the course has seen everything from royal visits to major Flat handicaps. Yarmouth’s summer fixtures and proximity to the beach have made it a staple of the East Anglian racing and holiday calendar.

Course Characteristics

Yarmouth is a left-handed, flat, oval-shaped turf track with a straight mile—the longest straight in British racing. The course features gentle bends and a long home straight, providing a fair test for all runners. The ground is generally well maintained, and the layout suits strong gallopers and horses who relish a long, sustained run to the line.

  • Track Type: Left-handed, flat, oval, turf, Flat only
  • Flat Races: Up to 2 miles, with a straight mile for sprints and longer races
  • Notable Quirk: The straight mile is the longest in Britain, producing fair, competitive racing

Facilities

Yarmouth offers three main enclosures: Grandstand & Paddock, Premier Enclosure, and Centre Course. All provide good views, access to bars, restaurants, and betting outlets.

The course features a modern grandstand, a parade ring, and a range of hospitality suites for groups and special occasions. Family-friendly areas, picnic lawns, and play zones make it a great choice for all ages.

  • Ticket Prices (2025): Centre Course £10–£15, Grandstand & Paddock £18–£25, Premier Enclosure £28–£40 (under-18s free with an adult)
  • Drinks: Pint £6.20, glass of wine £7, soft drinks £2.80
  • Food: From classic seaside snacks and fish & chips to gourmet options in hospitality

Atmosphere

Yarmouth is known for its laid-back, holiday vibe and friendly crowd. Feature meetings, like Ladies’ Day and the Eastern Festival, draw big crowds and a lively buzz, while regular fixtures are relaxed and family-oriented. The course’s proximity to the beach and town centre makes it a popular choice for combining racing with a day at the seaside.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Seaside location with easy access to the beach and town
  • Long, straight mile for fair racing
  • Family-friendly facilities and picnic areas
  • Great value tickets and relaxed atmosphere

Cons:

  • Flat racing only—no jumps action
  • Facilities are traditional rather than ultra-modern
  • Can be breezy due to the coastal setting

Notable Facts

  • Yarmouth’s straight mile is the longest in British racing.
  • The course is a favourite for trainers prepping two-year-olds and late-season handicappers.
  • The Eastern Festival is a highlight of the autumn Flat calendar.

Betting Advice

Yarmouth’s flat, galloping track and long straight mile suit strong finishers and horses who travel well. There’s little draw bias, but in big fields and on soft ground, a high draw can sometimes help.

Course specialists and those with proven stamina are always worth a look, particularly in testing conditions. Watch for trainers who regularly target the course with juveniles and handicappers.

  • Look for: Strong finishers, course specialists, and check the draw in soft ground
  • Trainer angles: Newmarket-based trainers often excel, especially with two-year-olds
  • Pace: Horses who travel well and finish strongly are often favoured

Getting There

Yarmouth Racecourse is just north of the town centre, well signposted from the A149 and A47. Free parking is available on site, with dedicated spaces for disabled visitors. The nearest train station is Great Yarmouth, about a mile from the course.

Parking

Parking is free and plentiful, with disabled spaces near the main entrance.

What to Wear

There’s no strict dress code—smart casual is fine for all enclosures. Dress for the weather, as the course is open and can be breezy, and comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the lawns and seafront.

Final Thoughts

Yarmouth Racecourse blends seaside charm with competitive Flat racing and a friendly welcome. Whether you’re a racing fan, a family, or just after a classic day out on the Norfolk coast, Yarmouth is a great place to enjoy the sport and the sea air.
